Healthy Lung Tips

Did you know that October is Healthy Lung Month? Many people are mindful of taking care of themselves, but lung health may not necessarily be top of mind. The National Heart, Blood and Lung Institute notes that lung diseases, excluding lung cancer, caused an estimated 235,000 deaths in 2010. When this statistic includes lung cancer, it is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in both men and women. Here are some tips from our providers of senior home care in Orland Park

Quit Smoking

If you’re currently a smoker, here’s another sign you should quit. Smoking increases your risk of developing lung cancer, and it is also linked to the majority of lung diseases including COPD, asthma and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. According to the ALA, within 12 hours of quitting smoking, the carbon monoxide levels in the blood return to normal.

Exercise as Much as You Can

The second most important thing you can do for your health is exercise. Aerobic exercise gets you breathing hard enough so that your heart and lungs are getting plenty of healthy blood flow. Even briskly walking for 20-30 per day can be beneficial to your lungs.

Breathe Clean Air

Pollutants are all around us and can cause lung damage. With age, our lungs become less able to fight off the toxins found in pollutants, so it’s important to reduce your exposure to pollutants. Try not to exercise near heavy traffic and take safety precautions at work if you’re exposed to harmful chemicals.

Taking care of your lungs may seem difficult, but even taking these precautions will do wonders for your lung health! For more information, please reach out to our dedicated staff at Home & Hearth Caregivers.
