May is Arthritis Awareness Month
Did you know that arthritis is the leading cause of disability in America? There are over 100 different types of arthritis, but only a handful are commonly talked about. In the United States alone, there are over 50 million adults and 300,000 children who are suffering from arthritis. Part of our senior assisted living services in Chicago include helping care for those who are suffering from arthritis.
In honor of May being Arthritis Awareness Month, our team at Home & Hearth Caregivers wants to call attention to the staggering statistics about arthritis and what to do if you think that you are developing it.
Foods to Fight Arthritis
Arthritis is not something that you can avoid altogether, but there are certain steps that you can take to help fight arthritis. These foods include:
- Seafood: great news for seafood lovers! Seafood such as salmon, tuna, sardines and mackerel are beneficial for decreasing inflammation and protecting your heart. If you are grocery shopping on a tighter budget, you can opt for frozen or canned fish as well!
- Tart cherries: This is one of the most powerful foods to help you fight arthritis, as tart cherries offer anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits.
- Walnuts: Walnuts are high in alpha linoleic acid (ALA), which is an anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acid that is beneficial to arthritis sufferers.
Incorporate the above foods into your daily routine and start seeing the benefits!
Why is Arthritis Awareness Month Important?
Arthritis awareness is important because if you recognize the symptoms early enough, you can start the proper treatment early. It also gives people who suffer from arthritis a chance to connect with other sufferers through the Arthritis Foundation.
